Reflecting on Year One as a Small Business Owner

December 21, 2020

Three Small Business Lessons from 2020 | Year One on Shopify

The Scrunchie Club is one year old! January 2nd, 2021 marks one year since we officially opened for business… and what a year it’s been.

There’s no clear roadmap for starting a business, especially for someone doing it for the first time. The Scrunchie Club is truly a labor of love, and I hope that shines through.

In honor of our one-year business anniversary, I wanted to document some of my biggest lessons learned from the last 12 months:

1. Great things take time.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the hope of “overnight success”, but in reality, that doesn’t exist. It takes time to find your groove, to figure out what works—and we’ll be better for it in the long run.

2. Kindness is everything.

I’ve encountered so much kindness over the past year: tear-jerking reviews from customers, successful womxn entrepreneurs who have provided generous advice, artists and nonprofits who are extremely busy but are excited about working with us, messages from friends new and old. It really does make a difference. It really does make the early mornings, the late nights, and the working weekends worth it. At The Scrunchie Club, kindness is king. (It’s even one of our brand values… but more on that another day.)

3. Things will change. Things won’t go as planned. That’s okay.

This is the obligatory 2020 clause. When I launched The Scrunchie Club in January, I had no idea what a turn this year would take. A lot of our original plans for 2020 had included in-person events (I love talking to strangers, especially about scrunchies!), and that was no longer possible. This year was nothing like I thought it’d be, but we’re here, and that’s what matters.

The world has been hit hard, and hair accessories are hardly a priority. But I hope we’ve been able to provide a little joy this year.

Cheers to year two,

Alyssa
