The Scrunchie Club: Sarah - welcome! We’re excited to be chatting with you today.

Sarah: Pumped to get to be a part of this!!

TSC:When did you first fall in love with photography?

SE: I’ve loved taking pictures for as long as I can remember, starting with my first Barbie camera back in first grade. I loved capturing memories and moments to hold onto. It wasn’t until this past year when I met my boyfriend, Hunter, who is also a professional photographer, that I realized how many doors photography could open. He’s taught me so much, which led me to start pursuing it.

TSC: When you’re feeling uninspired, do you have any strategies for getting yourself into the right headspace to create?

SE: I literally always say “I’m not a creative person” because I struggle, like many of us, with comparing myself to what a creative person “should be like.” I’ve found if I just grab my camera and start snapping pictures, ideas tend to come from there when I don’t put pressure on myself and just be present in the moment. I love telling stories, and everything and everyone has a story to tell, so I just remind myself of that and ask myself what’s one way I can tell that story and build from there.

TSC: What are some causes that are personally important to you?

SE: HopeTown in Cape Town, South Africa has my heart. I was volunteering there with “at risk youth” before Covid hit running a high school tutoring center, coaching a surf club, and helping with community nights, etc. The safe place they create for those kids is a beautiful thing.

TSC: How do you treat yourself with kindness?

SE: Allowing myself to feel my feelings (sounds simple, but it’s something I’ve struggled with) and accept that all feelings are valid and okay, even the ones that don’t feel so great. Also listening to my body! Resting when I need to, saying no to plans when I need to rest, etc. (Hard for an extrovert, ya know?)

TSC: What’s your favorite 90s (or early 2000s) television show?

SE: Ohhh tough. I think I’m going to have to go with Boy Meets World or Full House.

TSC: What’s your favorite 90s (or early 2000s) pop culture trend?

SE: Boy bands and Beanie Babies all the way.

TSC: Thanks again for chatting with us, Sarah! We’re so grateful to have you in the TSC community.
